I make smoothies all the time, and my two favorite ingredients are avocado and spinach. If you’ve never put avocado in a smoothie, you have to try it! It makes the smoothie thick and creamy and gives it a lovely green color.
I never follow recipes when it comes to smoothies, but I know some people like to have them. So here is one way you can make a green smoothie. It’s a creamy, delicious, and nutritious way to start your day (or continue or end your day).
Yield: 2 servings
Avocado Spinach Smoothie

Ingredients
- 1 cup packed baby spinach
- ½ of a large avocado, pit and peel removed
- 1 cup coconut milk (canned) or any other milk of your choice
- 2 Tablespoons honey or maple syrup
- Juice of half a large lemon
- ½ cup ice
- 2 scoops vanilla protein powder (optional)
- 1 teaspoon chia seeds (optional)
Instructions
- In a blender (I love my Blendtec), combine the spinach, avocado, coconut milk, honey, lemon juice, and the protein powder (if using). Blend on high till smooth.
- Add the ice cubes and blend well. Pour into serving glasses.
- Sprinkle a teaspoon of chia seeds (optional) in each glass and serve immediately.
Notes
- Because the avocado oxidizes quickly, this smoothie is best consumed immediately. If stored, it might darken a bit, but it will still be delicious.
- Any frozen fruit such as pineapple, mango, or peach can also be added to this smoothie. In that case, reduce the amount of sweetener and the ice a little bit.
My birthday is on St. Patrick’s Day and we were looking for a fun and healthy, hypoallergenic drink to serve: this works! We’ve never done avocado in a smoothie but we love our Good as Dirt green smoothie: 1.5 cups orange juice, 1 banana, 2 cups spinach, and 1 cup frozen strawberries!
Thank you for this great recipe. Will try it for this coming Saturday party ;-).
It’s not as green as the avocado and spinach one but it’s tasty enough that even those who don’t like green smoothies will enjoy it.
