There was a question on my Tater Tot Casserole post about tater tots being gluten free. I have been using Ore Ida, based on the ingredients list. However, I went to their web site and found that tater tots were not on their list of gluten-free products. I then contacted them and received the following letter. The tater tots are indeed gluten free (first item listed under Ore Ida products), and they included a recipe for gluten-free BBQ sauce at the end of the letter.

Please remember that product lists are not a substitute for reading labels. One mistake has been found on this list (it was removed), and there could be others. The list should be a helpful starting point.

My husband rather turned up his nose when i brought organic ketchup home, but he quickly changed his mind. We both were surprised at how much better it tastes. He now fusses if he has to have Heinz! :)

  2. Jen says

I came upon the website for Ore Ida when I was checking up on the ingredients on a breakfast casserole dish that calls for Ore Ida O'brien potatoes. I learned that many of their products are gluten free!

The first time I had a tater tot casserole was in college! :)

  3. Sistertex says

Are you sure Apple Cider Vinegar is Gluten-free?

I was told that neither their Apple Cider Vinegar, nor their Organic Ketchup are gluten-free in the USA, by the Hienz representative on the phone today.

  4. Linda says

Apple cider vinegar is definitely gluten free. Check safe and forbidden lists such as this one:

Maybe the rep was going on old information about vinegar and that might be why they said the ketchup isn't gf. You can check the ingredients.

This list came from the company, so I trust it, but it's always a good idea to read ingredients since things change.

  5. ajnemajrje says

In your recipe included, I was wondering about the worcestershire (sp) sauce. I was told that those kind of sauces are not GF. Is the lea and Perrins one brand that is GF?

I have been using tamari – bragg’s is gluten free – as a replacement for worcestershire and soy sauce. But it would be nice to know if there is one out there that is safe?

Also this list, is it just for products sold in the US or does it also apply to those sold in Canada as well?

    • says

I don’t use Worcestershire sauce because my husband has problems with something in it. I do the same as you and substitute a gf soy sauce. The Heinz list is several years old, so any information there should be double checked with the company or by reading the label, but I believe Lea Perrins is still gf. While many soy, teriyaki, and Worcestershire sauces do contain gluten, there are a few gf ones out there. I don’t know if the list applies to Canadian products or not. You would need to check with the company or see what information you can find on their web site.

  6. Marva Handelmann says

My friend Sharon called on 1/29/14 and talked to Diara about the Orida French fries that you microwave. Diara informed my friend if there is an MSG in the product it would be labeled on the package.

The other question was about the proprietary blend, if there was any of the following: all purpose flour, wheat, rye, or barley? Therefore specified on the French fries, Diara mentioned the proprietary blend is a secret recipe and could not give away the ingredients, but sharon only needed to know if there is one of the above mentioned flours in the ingredients. These flours are a gluten. Is this not a misrepresentation of your product when you state it is gluten free? Please respond back to me. Marva Handelmann.

You should contact Heinz directly. This blog is not associated with them in any way, and the product list given here is almost 5 years old, so things could have changed.

If you have a question about a recipe (especially substitutions and nutritional information), please read my FAQ page before asking the question in a comment.
