Kinnikinnick Doughnuts Review & Giveaway

pumpkin spice doughnuts

Kinnikinnick Foods is a company based in Canada.  I love the fact that their facility is gluten free.  In fact, they even provide their employees with free gluten-free products because they are not allowed to bring gluten into the facility.

It is their strict standards that allows me to feel comfortable eating their products.  They have a large variety of gluten-free products to choose from.  Most are also dairy and many are soy and nut free.

Recently, Kinnikinnick sent me an assortment of their doughnuts because they want to get word out that they have Pumpkin Spice Doughnuts available for your fall enjoyment.

chocolate doughnuts

All of their doughnuts are good.  They taste just like doughnuts should.  They are not particularly soft, but they’re not hard either.  They are just more dense than some gluten-filled doughnuts.

My gluten-free son likes their doughnuts and they make a special treat for him when he needs one.  I keep the doughnuts in the freezer, and pull them out as needed.

The regular varieties of doughnuts are packaged in boxes.  I suppose since it is a special item, the pumpkin spice doughnuts were in a plastic package that was not as protective.  The doughnuts themselves were not harmed, but much of the glaze was broken off.  If looks are important to you or your child, you might want to keep this in mind when ordering any seasonal doughnuts.

I haven’t tried these yet — can’t find them at my local grocery stores. But I’ve been jonesing for a donut lately, because we have Krispy Kremes brought to my workplace once a week. They always smell so good.

    • Linda Jennings says

Please enter me in the drawing and I would love to be the winner since I have not had a donut since I was diagnoised with celiac 1 1/2 years ago. Oct 15th is my 65th birthday so winning donuts would be a double celebration.

  2. April Rutherford says

My kids and I love Kinnikinnick Donuts, We have enjoyed the glazed and Cinnamon Sugar variety. So delicious. I can’t wait to try Pumkpin Spice, my all time favorite flavor….

  4. Linda:-) says

I love Kinnikinnick products. Their donuts are great. I’ve not tried the pumpkin spice ones yet, not sure if they are in VA or not! A little trick to warm them up and soften them– wrap loosely in a paper towel and heat in microwave for about 10 seconds or so. They come out hot and fresh tasting. The frosting will melt like a glaze. These are sooooo good.

  5. juleigh miller says

I hope I can find these somewhere. I only really like donuts in the fall. Maybe I’m just missing our local orchard’s cider donuts.

  6. Meghan says

I haven’t tried any of these yet – but I do love everything and anything pumpkin!

  10. says

These were hard for me to find, but finally found them in the secret freezer in my local grocery store. It’s a freezer section off the beaten path that has those Vegan pizzas and the Rice Dream ice cream. I LOVE them!! I have them in the freezer and use them as a treat once per week. I’ve not seen the pumpkin ones but they sound good. My favorite is the glazed, but the chocolate & cinnamon ones are good too. I do not care for them thawed, only fresh from the freezer. They do not have that grainy texture or weird after taste. They are WONDERFUL!

  11. Patty says

I haven’t had a doughnut in months, even before going gluten-free. Sure would like to be able to try one. The pumpkin spice one sounds yummy!

  40. Terri says

I terribly miss donuts since being gluten-free, and even before since they are not the same as they were 30 years ago (before bleached flour, hydrogenated oil, etc), and they are time consumig to make. I think I might splurge in my budget and try some of these. Kinnikinnick donuts! Or maybe I will win and get to try some free.

  41. Janine Granquist says

We love the donuts. My mom buys them whenever we go to the health food store that carries them. She heats them up in the microwave before eating, to help make them soft(er). Yes, little on the heavy side, but pretty good :)

    Thanks for the contest.

  71. Kimberly says

I have purchased for my husband a number of frozen glazed gluten-free donuts 😀 we discovered them a few months ago, and I was hesitant to buy them because they were like six bucks a box for six small donuts – but they’re really really delicious. My husband loves them, and they were his first gluten-free donuts.

  72. Kimberly says

I have posted this to my Facebook (husband will be thrilled we can possibly order some)

  73. Karesha says

I haven’t tried these doughnuts. I always look at them when I’m at the health food atore but have not purchased yet

  74. margaret kramer says

I’m a fan of all things “Kinnikinnick”….but the donuts are my special treat! I live in Alberta, Canada and had the opportunity to visit the Kinnikinnick Bakery a few years ago. I was newly diagnosed & had heard I could find some great GF baking products at their store. We were greeted with a table of their White cake samples – delicious – and I found the supplies I needed to make my GF cooking and baking
successful. So when their Donuts arrived in our local health food store I was delighted…they are soooo good! My husband and I winter in Arizona, so it’s great to find these products there as well!

  75. says

I’m subscribed to your site here (and love all the cool companies you review, trying new pricey GF products feels less scary when I know someone else likes them)

  79. Gail says

I live in New Brunswick, Canada and have not seen the Kinnikinnick brand in any of the Loblaw Stores that we have here, but I am sure they are in the larger cities like Halifax. I would really like to have the opportunity to try gluten free products that are made here and it is good to know that there are more and more companies jumping into the gluten free market here. I normally get my products across the border when I make my semi-weekly trip to Maine.

Thanks Linda for the great giveaways.

  80. Amy says

My 6 year old daughter Elena loves Kinnikinnick cookies, but we’ve never bought the doughouts. As a matter of fact, she has never eaten a doughnut in her life. I would love to introduce her to these! I’ll have to see if I can find them.

Kinnikinnick Doughnuts – Review & Giveaway

If you’re not familiar with Kinnikinnick Foods, their mission statement is:

To provide Celiacs, people with Autism and other people with special dietary requirements with an uncontaminated, risk free source of food products.  To provide our customers with food that actually looks and tastes Great.

Their products are produced in dedicated gluten, wheat, and nut free facilities that use soy, eggs and sesame seeds. I found their video on the importance of dedicated gluten-free facilities and equipment interesting.  In it they simply show us a high speed waffle line that they purchased used and had to clean.  It took them four weeks to remove all traces of gluten.  You can see in the video how much gluten can be found on various parts of the equipment.  They took the equipment apart to clean it—something that is not done when a company uses shared equipment.  Many of the areas cannot easily be cleaned, yet are close to if not actually in contact with the food.  You can also find the video on the Kinnikinnick Foods website.

For the Valentine’s season,Kinnikinnick is offering the above pictured cinnamon apple doughnuts which are gluten, dairy, soy, and nut free.  They are available until February 28th and only through their website or by calling toll free 1-877-503-4466.

Kinnikinnick sent me a sampling of their doughnut varieties.  These apple cinnamon doughnuts may be more dense than their gluten-containing counterparts, but they have that doughnut flavor along with the cinnamon and a hint of apple.  Gluten-free son and I both liked them, and my sweet-toothed son did everything he could to talk me into giving him one, which I did.  He thought they were pretty good, and he’s a gluten eater.  The doughnuts are small, about 3 inches in diameter and come 6 to a package.

Don’t expect a gluten-free doughnut to be exactly like a big soft gluten-filled doughnut.  But if doughnuts are something you really miss, these are good.  You can look for Kinnikinnick in the frozen section of health food stores and the frozen health food section of some regular grocery stores.  I have seen them at Giant.  There is a store locator on their web site or you can order directly from them.

Kinnikinnick also offers other gluten-free (and dairy free) products such as breads, cookies, mixes, cooking/baking products and more.

I miss the doughnuts with jelly in the middle and icing and sprinkles on the top

Doughnuts used to be a major temptation to me, when I was young and didn't think I should avoid all that sugar…and gluten. There's not anything else that smells or tastes quite the same. Now that I'm older and wiser, what a treat it would be to have some gluten-free doughnuts!

Oh how I miss vanilla doughnuts with vanilla icing and rainbow sprinkles. I can make gluten free ones, but they are just not quite as good.

I miss the apple donuts we used to get when we went apple picking. Fortunately, Kinnikinnick comes through, as usual! :)

No gluten free donuts available anywhere close to where I live – I really miss all flavors – even the plain ….Will gladly take some off your hands please :)

  86. BeckyD says

I miss the flavored cake donuts – like pumpkin, or blueberry, or cherry.
I buy Kinnikinnick donuts for my son for special occasions. We can only have the cinnamon sugar ones though, because those are the only ones without corn. (he also has a corn allergy.) If it's been a while since you've had a donut, and if you warm these a little, they really hit the donut spot!
    I follow you on Facebook!
