French Meadow Bakery Review & Giveaway

When French Meadow Bakery recently contacted me about sending samples of their gluten-free flour tortillas and fudge brownies I first looked into their gluten-free status.  The company does produce gluten containing products, but they are very careful about their gluten-free products.  Here’s a quote from the email I received:

French Meadow Bakery’s gluten-free products are made in a dedicated gluten-free facility and carry the seal of the Gluten-Free Certification Organization ( French Meadow Bakery products can be found in stores nationwide including, Whole Foods, Safeway and natural food markets.

I’m very grateful for the GFCO because I believe I can trust products that carry their approval, and I’m glad that French Meadow Bakery has chosen to be certified with them.

The second thing I needed to know about these products is whether they are dairy free.  I thought the tortillas probably were and brownies probably weren’t, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that both products are dairy free!

The French Meadow Bakery website is currently receiving a “face lift” and therefore much of the product information is not available online, but I am told it should be up and running by April.  The site does have a store locator if you are interested in looking for their products.

I’m not sure what their complete line of gluten-free products includes, but I’ll give you my opinion of the two products I sampled.

French Meadow Brownie The brownies are purchased frozen and they are packaged nine to a box.  Each brownie is individually wrapped.  They are pretty small in size, about two inches square.

The brownies are very good.  They are moist and chocolaty.  Although they are small, they are dense and satisfying.  The fact that they are individually wrapped makes them perfect for adding to a packed lunch.  I think anyone would enjoy them.

Zucchini and Corn Quesadilla_high res I was not as impressed with the tortillas, although as far as gluten-free tortillas go, they are pretty good.

The tortillas are also found in the freezer section, but even after being thawed, they are not soft enough to use without heating.  There are no heating instructions on the package, so the first time I tried microwaving a couple.  They didn’t heat evenly and one broke when I folded it.

After that I went to heating them in a skillet which worked pretty well, though mine never browned as much as the ones in the photo (which is a French Meadow Bakery photo).  The flavor was pretty good and I enjoyed using them for breakfast burritos.

I forgot to measure the size.  They are not as big as a regular flour tortilla, but are a little bigger than a corn tortilla (I think).

In their defense, I have tried several gluten-free flour tortillas (including Trader Joe’s) and have not been very impressed with any of them.  It is simply one of those things that is not as soft as it’s gluten containing counterpart.

But then, I don’t miss tortillas.  They are nice to have once in a while, but I can live without them.  If you miss tortillas and don’t want to make your own, this brand is certainly worth trying.

I have tried the French Meadow Bakery brownies. A local store sells the brownie bites in the plastic container, individually wrapped brownies and the multiple individually wrapped brownies in a box. All are equally delicious. I am partial to buying one brownie at a time–probably because they are larger!

    • Angel Harris says:

I would probably be partial to buying the individual brownies, as well, but mainly because I would want to eat them all if I bought more than one. :)

I have never tried French Meadow Bakery, but I am always looking for new gluten-free/dairy free products to try! The dairy-free baked goods seem to be the hardest for me to find. We don’t have anything in the way of a Trader Joe’s, etc. out here.

  45. Melissa D says:

I would love to try those tortillas and brownies!

  46. It’s funny, tortillas are one of the few things I do miss. I love the smell of a white flour tortilla. I think maybe it’s because we always ate whole wheat tortillas in my house growing up, so that smell of the white flour ones was always something I wanted but didn’t get to have very often. Anyway, I’d love to try these out. Thanks for the giveaway!

  47. I actually have tried their white bread. It’s the best GF bread that I have had to date – especially when cooked (ie grilled cheese sandwich). My local store doesn’t carry any other products so I would love to try out the brownies and tortillas. I miss tortillas!!

  48. the hamburger rolls are pretty good, the cupcakes are dry.My daughter loves the brownies!

  49. I have not tried either the brownies or torillas but would love to. I do miss torillas because the ones I get always fall apart :(

  50. I have tried the brownies, they keep the individually wrapped ones frozen at a store near here. I usually end up eating the brownie before it thaws too so I don’t know what the actual texture is. Ha!
I’d be interested in trying the tortillas, I am always up for that!

  57. I have tried some of their products…yummy!

  58. I love French Meadow multi-grain bread but have never seen their other products at stores here in New Orleans! I would love to try the brownies and tortillas — then be able to ask stores to carry them!! Thanks for offering the giveaway!

  68. My fave French meadow bread is the Cranberry wild rice bread. It is not gf, but it’s my daughter that is the celiac. They also make pretty good yeast free breads, if you have candida…That’s how I found them years ago. I will have to look for the GF stuff!

    • Janis S. says:

Thanks, nice to know they have yeast free breads as I’m limiting yeast in my diet.

I have not tried these products but like you, I appreciate the GFCO certificqtion. And I love brownies. Please count me in! :)

  71. Walt Disney World serves French Meadow’s brownies. I really enjoyed them while there (and may have snuck a couple in my suitcase on our last day)! Sometimes they just came in the package, but a couple of the restaurants dressed them up, and they were fantastic! The best one I had was warmed, with some hot (dairy free) chocolate sauce, (dairy free) vanilla ice cream, and fresh strawberries. It was amazing! I’d love to get my hands on these babies again.
I’ve seen the tortillas at the store, but just haven’t justified indulging, so I’d also love to win some of those!

  72. Enter me please!! I’d love to try these!

  73. I’m subscribed

  74. Melody says:

We tried the FMB Brownies and Chocolate Chip cookies when we were in Disneyworld. They were quite tasty as far as packaged GF/DF/SF/CF goodies go! It was just thrilling to be able to buy something SAFE there! I subscribe in my RSS feed.

  75. Melanie says:

I live only blocks from the French Meadow Bakery & Cafe on Lyndale in Minneapolis. Unfortunately though because their GF items are not baked there, they never have them fresh. But I do like the individually wrapped brownies and choc chip cookies, as well as their GF breads.
If you’re ever in the Minneapolis area, we have a local pizza chain called Pizza Luce. They have a full GF menu, which includes GF pizza crust from a local GF bakery that has closed their doors, but continues to make the crusts for Pizza Luce. And they also carry these PHENOMENAL GF biscuits/rolls from French Meadow, that are made specifically for Pizza Luce. You can’t buy them on the shelf anywhere, which stinks, but they sure are good!

  76. I have not tried these products yet, but I’d love to give them a whirl!

  77. I subscribe via RSS.

  78. Janis S. says:

I haven’t tried any of their products, winning would be a great way to do it. I’ve tried some gf tortillas in the past and haven’t liked them at all. Would be interested in seeing how these are.

We just tried the tortillas and my daughter loved it! Quesadillas were one of her favorites before finding out she has Celiac Disease. We’ll have to go look for the brownies!

  84. Yes, we’ve tried their brownies and chocolate chip cookies.

  85. Have not tried their products. Would love to, thanks! Love your blog too!

  86. Karin Goodman says:

I have not tried any of the French Meadow Bakery products. I do miss making burittos. Burittos with corn tortilla’s are not the same. I have tried a couple brands and like you I have not been impressed. Several break, even after heating. I would love to try these.

  87. I have 4 children with celiac disease who would love to try French Meadow Bakery products.

  88. While I would love to try the brownies first, being chocolate, of course, those tortillas would be a great thing to have, too. I love quesadillas, soft tacos, burritos, etc., but don’t often have good gluten-free tortillas for them.

  89. We haven’t tried their products yet, but would love to!

  90. And we get all of your posts via email!

  91. I’ve had some of their baked goods and as far as gluten free products go, I thought they were close to the best I’ve found in a store. I’ve used the tortillas and they worked better than the cardboard brown rice wraps and more durability than corn tortillas.

  92. Kristin says:

I have never tried them as I am only one week into my GF life, so I would love to try something, I am a sweet addict and need something to make me feel not so deprived.

  93. Angel Harris says:

I was recently dx’d with celiac & am always looking for tasty replacements for gluten-laden foods my whole family will like. From the other posts, I think I would like to try the French Meadow Bakery products.

  94. Amy Hint says:
